Diagnostics
A technician starts by reading the stored trouble codes with a scan tool.
A trouble code points to a system, not to the exact part that failed, so the technician then tests and inspects the related components to find the actual cause.
That way the repair targets the real problem instead of a guess based on the code alone. Before any work begins, you get a clear explanation of what is wrong and what the repair involves.
Warning Signs
Book a diagnostic if you notice any of the following:
Check engine light: whether it stays on or flashes.
Other dashboard warning lights: including the ABS, battery, oil pressure and temperature lights.
Rough idle or stalling: the engine shakes at a stop or cuts out while driving.
Hard starting: the engine cranks longer than usual or does not start.
Loss of power: the car feels sluggish when you accelerate or climb a hill.
Poor fuel economy: you are filling up more often for the same driving.

A steady check engine light
A steady check engine light means the system has found a fault that should be checked soon, so book a diagnostic instead of waiting for the light to go away.
A flashing check engine light

Very rough, overheating or losing power
